This year I've been busy!

Last Wednesday I committed genocide... Sorry about that, kyme (-5000 points). Last Saturday I pushed lavhire in the mud (-17 points). In May I caught a purse-snatcher who stole ithronluin's purse (30 points). In January I helped yuhi_homura see the light (8 points). Last Sunday I put gum in sizerazrael's hair (-12 points).

Yesterday was a sad day. Mother nature was sad (rain whole day), the people around me was sad, I was sad.

We lost Rylands yesterday.

He was 26, his birthday just a day before his death.

His funeral is today.

Its a strange thing, having a death so close to you. I can't say I knew Rylands well; I only met him once. But he was a good man, cheerful and funny. I will always remember how he shrugged off the burning of his house as just another bump in the road and quickly moved on. Its just cruel for the world to take away someone as strong as him.

As of now, I am broke. That's right, my financial condition is that I have to survive 1 more month without any money. Just great.

I another note, after I had announce to the IRC that i am broke, I continued my sleep...

Strange dream to remember. It was something out of a game, but i remembered it in a semi-narrative + first person perspective. Anyway, it goes like this...

It starts out with a commend post, some commander giving out orders. The scene is all blurry and there isn't much i can remember of this scene other then I was the commander. It then shifts to a small monitor displaying data of some sort. Among the data displayed is images of some aircraft, most of them prop-driven airships or helicopters. There is an order to destroy some fort, but anti-aircraft fire is hampering the mission. Then one lone airship decides to perform a suicide mission on the fort and I wish them good luck, or something (I don't remember what was said). Strangely, on the monitor, the codename for the airship was Black Hawk. The airship, after being shot down by AA fire, crashes into the fort, breaking apart. It then moves to a movie-like perspective and as the parts of the destroyed airship crash into the fort walls, the walls crumble and water gushes out, like a dam. And that ends part one.

(Yes, part one. Long dream...)

The second part starts with some elven-like beings fleeing the village that the fort is overlooking. As they move away, quickly but calmly, a young elv returns with a bag. He then declares to the elder elves that he had found untainted soil and proceeds to pour the constants of the bag out. He then continues to say it comes from a river some distance away. The elders are impressed and the young elv continues by growing a tree with magic out of the soil. It then enters a dream-like state where there are many trees around, along with a modern city next to it. The young elv is there, overlooking the city with his hands on one of the trees. Then it shifts to the elder elves saying they must leave right now and they dive into the sea.

From this point on, it becomes a game description, with me somehow understanding it. The game will have 2 areas; the surface and underwater. There is a time limit to how long you may spend in the underwater area as to prevent stagnation of the surface area. I also understand that this is a RTS of sort. End of part two.

The third part is short. It starts with a industrial overlook. I then moved, causing the dream to become dislocated. Somehow, I knew this was a dream but it seemed too real. The dream ends as I suddenly realize I was reading a game review book and tried to find out the name of the game, failing to do so. So ends the first dream.

And it doesn't end there...

After awaking from the first dream, I went back to sleep soon after. Another dream came to me, however completely different from the first dream. In this dream, seen completely first-person, I am looking at some cards scattered on a wooden floor. The area is dark with a slight blueish tint. I then move down a flight of stairs made out of dislocated wooden planks connected by the metal railing. Reaching the bottom, I again am fascinated by another set of cards, scattered the same way. I repeat this 2 or 3 times before finally, after reaching the bottom of the stairs, i observe my surroundings. Its a large, high square room illuminated with night skylight. The room seems to be some living room of sorts, with a slight depression in the middle and the level areas forming a C-like shape. At the left end of the level area is twin large doors. The stairs is located slightly towards the left of the room, starting from the edge of the depression. however, there is no upper floor and the stairs end suddenly. The dream then shifts to a room similar to my room, but smaller. I can identify my bed, but a door towards the end of my room seems new. I enter another room similar to my room from that door, only it contains items I don't own. There is a figurine case filled with figurines to my left and a large sofa to my left. It is then i realize that I have had another dream of the same place, with me playing a PS2. After that realization, a small TV appears next to the sofa. I then continue to the door on the other side and when I opened it, I am back in the living room, right under the slight of stairs. I then remember I had dreamed of this same place before, and also I realize that this is a dream itself. I awoke then.

Both dreams occurred within a time span of 1 half to 2 hours.

Basic theory, which has no reference to any relevant available theory at the moment…

First step to building a Persocom (yeah, you read right…)

I’m writing this cause… I have absolutely nothing else to do, for the moment. Or maybe it’s to put my thoughts into words so that I don’t start contradicting myself in my head… (happens too many times…) Anyway, let’s start with the basic model:

Persocom – An android / gynoid (most probably later) capable of interacting with humans at a human-to-human level while able to utilize machine level capabilities. (or something like that…)

Simple as it seems, it is a daunting task to even come close to building one. In the process of its creation, I have identified 4 levels which have to be achieved before the creation of one is possible.

Level 1 – Finance

Why finance? Cause money runs the world, that’s why. Say what you want, but that is the truth laid bare to you. R&D cost, payments to researchers, equipment cost (COSTLY stuff, if you are going to be toying with experimental materials). Yeah, unless a major company (think Honda… or maybe a joint, since I doubt only one company will be able to finance it ^^) is willing to carry the cost, then we may begin.

Level 2 – Body

To put it simply, only think of the best, even if it isn’t sensible. Artifical muscles, reactive skin, solar-cell hair (yes, I’m not joking.). The reconstruction of a human body, minus some functions (eating, sleeping…). Power to run it? Batteries ought to suffice. Recharging them? Having a dedicated (large) recharging unit which sucks kilowatts isn’t going to be economical. So we can have them solar powered. Still, there is the problem of the solar-cells; they’re shiny and don’t look good if you patch the Persocom with square meters of it. Simply to put, unless development of more efficient, material looking solar-cells becomes a reality, powering the unit will be a huge problem.

Second part is the electronic system that will be the brain of the unit. Processing power, along with memory and storage capacity will become issues during the design and creating process. With quantum computing at the horizons, creation of small, compact super computers may be a reality, so lets put a check on that… for now.

Next is durability and COST. Yeah, making one prototype will cost, but if that cost translates to the cost per unit, I doubt anyone can afford it. Also, as with all machines, with the accelerated return theorem, the life span of the unit must be taken into consideration. Hopefully, manufacturing process can be simplified, such as modular assembly and cheap China labor (hopefully still as cheep). Of course, my original plans were to have them assembled in third world countries and have them imported. A win win situation.

Level 3 – AI

This is where it gets dirty; an AI that must be able to interact with humans effectively, make its own decisions, and generally, keep itself from ending up in the junkyard. Not an easy task. Current AI developments are gearing a single AI to a specific task, like a machine. Not so with the Persocom. My goal is to create a kind of being, separate from humans but respected as one. And unless the Persocom can act like a human, it will be a difficult task.

My plan; 2 AI’s within a single unit. One Ai known as the Sub-AI will control the unit’s functions e.g motor functions, temperature regulations, sensors. This AI will also limit the units functions to within acceptable levels; don’t want the unit to crush a persons hand now do you? Also, it will relay the sensor data is information and not pure machine code. This is vital for the second AI, the Core-AI

The Core-AI will be a Cognitively-inspired AI, which is essentially an AI but without any algorithms and no function. It will, however have information feed to it from its sensors; images, sound, smell, touch, and possibly, pain. By applying basic language recognition software, it will become possible to teach the AI to make sense of the information it is getting, thus in a way creating an AI that doesn’t ‘think’ in machine code, but about the same way humans do. As the Core-AI learns, the Sub-AI will create algorithms that will allow the Core-AI to further understand the information it is getting. This symbiotic link between the two AI’s will be the pride of the Persocom, essentially making the Persocom seem more human-like then a machine.

Of course, there is the problem of memory and the greatest problem, the ‘Three Law’ problem. As with memory, with triniry computing making its debut with the quantum computer, it will be possible to store vast amount of data within a small shell. However, if the need arises, the Sub-AI will began deleting older data, creating smaller, reference copies of them. Thus, in a way, the Persocom will forget, but will be able to recall the moment, even if the sensory information is erased.

The ‘Three Law’ problem is, in other words, the safety of us human when dealing with AI controlled machines. While Issac Asimov three laws (four if you want it…) seem perfect, in reality, it is useless. Thus to properly create a truly Asimovrion machine, it must thus learn two important concepts; death and life. Only when a machine can comprehend the preciousness of life and the inevitable death which follows, can a machine truly be considered ‘safe’. I would put it as ‘alive’ but some people won’t like it.

Level 4 – Marketability

Face it, if you are going to make something like that, you’ll want to make money out of it. To put it simply, HOW MUCH MONEY CAN I MAKE OUT OF SELLING IT?

In the face answer; probably nothing.

First of all, it isn’t sensible nor is it economical to make a life size, human interacting / imitating machine. Even if it is done, the amount put into its development would be astronomical, and I doubt the sales would be able to cover everything. Finally, how much it would cost? Made and delivered within half a year of its completion, about the price of a luxury car, I think.

Now notice I haven’t even talked about what it can do, but then what it can do is not the point here; it’s simply stupid to invest in the development of a Persocom. Besides, if they want nursing robots, it’s only a few years before they are on sale.

The verdict; I just got too much time on my hand.

The Cengalians unite again

The last 2 weeks was rather uneventful (thus the lack of updates) but luckly there was something to break the chain of boredom.
Ok... lets recap on how it happened.

Friday - Danial SMS'ed me early in the morning for a DotA match in the afternoon. Naturaly, I accapted. Then it was collage. Chem test that day was suprisingly easy so 1 worry down ^^. With that done (didn't stay back long, Erica had work to finish before her next class, so 1 was just in the way), too the bus back n met up wit Danial at netempire (CC). Played 2 games before running out of cash but stayed back to watch the other games. Oh, and just before Danial left, he told me that the next day was a 3 Cengal reunion party. Interesting... we haven't had 1 for over 2 years ^^ I confirmed it with Brian during CG that night. It seems Jo Ann was leaving and decided to unite the old gang ^^

Saturday - Got the time from Brian (He said 6p.m) but then recived a SMS saying it was 7-8. No matter, i'll be going earlier to chat with the girls. Spend the day working on my stories but got nowhere good. Left at 5.30 and got there at exectly 6, on the spot. And i wasn't alone. Brian pulled up behind me (nearly reversing his car into a hole) just as in got out. Entering the house, we discovered that we were the only males of the party (which WAS supposed to start at 6) Lets have a member check; me, Brian, Jo Ann, Li Shan, Li Quin, ... and that's it... for now. Around 7, Li Quin left (family dinner), Li Shan and Jo Ann picked up Siew Li and we got Danial. Party number was now... 6. A farcry of the 20 over the lst reunion had. Also, it seems that because of Stephen's screwup (the time... and he was incharge of getting the guys), a few guys couldn't make it. The girls were in a worst case. Jo Ann's female liaison couldn't come which in turn meant that her female gang couldn't make it also. For a week of planning (that's what Jo Ann said), the party was going down hill. We didn't mind thought. Ordered pizza and we ate while catching up. Like I said that day, people change and move on. Arriving later was Wai King, Xe Zin and Pui Yen along with Li Quin (returning from dinner), swelling our numbers to 10. After about an hour, we decided to go out for 'yam cha'. That happened 15 minutes later cause of Jo Ann's insistence to get the group photo perfect (being the shortest during form 3, she made sure we noticed her growth sprout). So then we got into our cars and took of for William's (according to Li Quin, the dirtiest place she has ever gone to... but the food's good so the rest isn't complaining) There, we bumped into a few old faces (including Sherry which because of her caused the 3 Cengal Sherry gang to miss the reunion). We had a few drinks and then we dispersed at around 0030 today. While we lacked the people, i could say the reunion was a success. Jo Ann hinted that when she come's back from Aus next year, she'll have another reunion. And after yesterday, i'll be looking forward to it ^^

On the problem side, with V day approching, i've been thinking of this girl and it's getting my emotions confused. More on that in the next update.

These pass days have been dedicated to DotA (if ur wondering, DotA Allstars is a very popular hero map for warcraft 3).

Friday was DotA from 10 till 5 (eating in between) n CG at nite. CG was fun but had a small problem with the car (my father wanted it back by 10, n i'll only be back by 12 earliest, so go figure ^^). Picked up Liz at 7.50 (i was late but luckly for me she didn't mind *wipes sweet of forehead* ^^) n was at the church by 8. They it was at 8, but being the Malaysians we are, it only began 30 minutes later.

Brian slipped in at around 9 (his band practice was NEXT week and not yesterday as he had thought so ^^). Seeing that he was here, we made a crazy plan; we would drive both our cars to my house, drop off my car n hoop on his back ^^. Makes ppl wonder what crazier plans we can make ^^

After that came supper (as alwis). Got there at 10.30 but only got to ORDER our food at 11.30 (friday = weekend = too many customers to handle ^^) Liz had to be back by 0000 (+ - a few minutes) so we ate fast, drove fast n thanking god for being alive ^^

Today was another home day, execpt i took the excuse to buy a new goldfish (last 1 died, sad thing) to visit the cyber for more DotA goodness ^^.

On the sidenote, i've invaded Megumi's n Neptune's blog ^^. Too bad i cant get the pics Nep has on her blog... they're SOOOO good T.T.

lets talk about to day... but today was VERY boring (execpt the occasional DotA matches... i'll be getting there) so lets talk about Yesterday ^^

yesterday = awake. while i did sleep quite early (1 a.m anyone?), ill still snozze in class. Its instincts ^^. Yesterday however, my eyes were wide open the whole time. Must be lossing my touch XP.

yesterdays good - talked more to Erica n Vitia (Vitia decided to FFK MDM classes), got little work for the upcoming hols (which is today ^^), found Jeniffer (she dyed her hair red n SERIOUSLY, i couldn't tell it was her till she started talking), shopping at pyramid wit Chi Kheng n Jeniffer (an interesting insight into the mind of shopping girls ^^), rock climbing, and the LONG sleep after ^^ ZZZZZzzzzzz.....

yesterdays bad - Erica lost her wallet (a BRIGHT BLUE 1 at that... how could we have missed it?), i'm 30 bucks poorer, my arms ache (climbing rocks can do that to you ^^), Liz doesn't have hols tomorrow (thats today) so cant go disturb her, Brian busy too... and i'm dead tired.
